Signals | O-Scale | Dwarf and Switch Indicators

This section has 3 different types of signals, dwarf signals, switch indicator signals and switch stands.

Switch stands are manually operated at points where automatic switches are not used such as stub sidings.

Switch indicators look like a dwarf, but only indicate the direction of the switch.

Dwarfs not only give switch direction, but also block occupancy.  In order to get a clear aspect on any of the dwarfs, the switches must be aligned for the route and the following 2 blocks must be unoccupied.  Dwarf signals are used in slow speed areas.  Since a dwarf automatically indicates slow speeds, the railroad can use these without having to build full 3 target ground signals.

The SL-11, PRR-11 and the OD-11 Dwarfs can also be used for detecting rolling stock on hidden sidings.  Link to the following instruction sheet for more information. Dwarfs for siding detection

6931 Atlas Type D 2-Color Switch Signal
6935 Atlas 4-Pack Type D 2-Color Switch Signal

This signal comes with a Signal Control Board (6931A) that operates off of the Atlas turnout motors.  It will only display red or green aspects depending on which way the turnout is facing.  It will need an additional SCB to integrate into the Custom Signals Modular Signal System.

NJI # 3300 and # 3301 SWITCH INDICATORS

These are an old style indicator of switch direction.  No electronics supplied.

ITEM # 50 ROSS CUSTOM SWITCHES LIGHTED BRASS SWITCH STAND WITH BULB

This is a manual switch stand that can be used to change the turnout direction.

ITEM # 3911 NJI STAR TYPE SWITCH STAND

This is a manual switch stand that can be used to change the turnout direction.

ITEM # 3912  NJI BRANCH LINE SWITCH STAND

This is a manual switch stand that can be used to change the turnout direction.

ITEM # 3913 NJI MAIN LINE SWITCH STAND

This is a manual switch stand that can be used to change the turnout direction.

ITEM # 3914 NJI LO RAMAPO SWITCH STAND

This is a manual switch stand that can be used to change the turnout direction.

This is a manual switch stand that can be used to change the turnout direction.

SL-11 SINGLE TARGET DWARF SIGNAL

This signal will also be produced by Custom Signals.  The dwarf signal usually indicates slow speeds only.  It is used in yards, sidings and other places so as not to be confused with block signals.  Because it integrates into the Custom Signals Modular Signal System, all three aspects will be displayed.

SL-12 DOUBLE TARGET DWARF SIGNAL

This signal is produced by Custom Signals.  Since each target will give all 3 colors, multiple aspects will be available.  It can be used at interlockings and junctions for more than just turnout direction.  It can also indicate faster speeds than a single target dwarf.  It can also be used at the entrance to a yard.

PRR-11. PRR POSITION LIGHT DWARF SIGNAL

Custom Signals will also be producing the PRR-11 Dwarf signal.  Unlike the ground and bridge signals, the dwarf will display a golden white light just like the real dwarf.  Using the dwarf SCB included with the signal, it will display all 4 dwarf aspects SLOW CLEAR, SLOW APPROACH, RESTRICTING and STOP.

There will also be 2 automatic sequences possible.  First will be SLOW CLEAR, STOP, SLOW APPROACH and SLOW CLEAR.  The second will be SLOW CLEAR, STOP, RESTRICTED and SLOW CLEAR.  In either case, the Slow Clear can be omitted.  The dwarf can be used anywhere slow speeds are required or where the dwarf is shown in the TCL.  The dwarf is shown by a hexagon shape.

OD-11 TYPE-D DWARF SIGNAL

This signal will be produced by Custom Signals.  This will be a full 3 color dwarf with SCB so that it will integrate into the complete signal system.  Using this correctly with other ground or dwarf signals will not only tell turnout direction, but also block occupancy.  This signal can also be used as a subway signal.

Actual production may be different than photo.
